Your time is not free, and the maths knows it
A default hourly rate prices a recipe’s standard hours when a run logs none of its own — and the default is deliberately unset rather than zero, so until a rate exists labour reports as unknown, not free. Per-maker rates override it, captured at the moment hours are logged.
